Rules 2019

14th Anna Amalia Competition for Young Guitarists

The 14th Anna Amalia Competition for Young Guitarists will be held
from 23rd to 28th  April 2019 in Weimar (Germany) at the Musikgymnasium Schloss Belvedere.

 

Age groups

I :    up to 13 years (born after 23rd April 2005)
II :    14 – 16  years (born 24th April 2002 –  23rd April 2005)
III :    17 – 20  years (born 24th April 1998 – 23rd April 2002)
(age on 23rd April 2019)

 

Prizes

In each age group, a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize can be awarded. In addition, prizes for the best interpretation of a classical work, the contemporary set pieces and other special prizes may be awarded. The total amount of the prizes will be about 25.000 €.
The jury has the right not to award every prize.

Competition programme

Age group I:
Free programme of works from a minimum of 3 different periods, including one classical* and one contemporary piece (Total duration 12 – 15 min)

Age group II:
(Total duration: 17 – 20 min)
a)    one piece from Ilias Rachaniotis: Gitarrenstücke für die Jugend
or
2 to 3 pieces from Falk Zenker: Miniaturen (Edition Margeaux)
b)    one original guitar piece from the classical period*
one classical piece
c)    free programme

Age group III:
1st round:
(Total duration: 12 – 15 min)
a) one of the following Caprices by Luigi Legnani from op. 20:
No. 1, 2, 3, 7, 15, 22, 24, 27,  29 or 32
b) one piece from Ilias Rachaniotis: Gitarrenstücke für die Jugend
or
2 to 3 pieces from Falk Zenker: Miniaturen (Edition Margeaux)
c)    free programme
Final:
(Total duration: 17 – 20 min)
a)    one original guitar piece from the classical period*
b)    free programme

 

*– work originaly written for guitar by a composer of the first half of the 19th century, who is born before 1800, as for example Aguado, Carcassi, Carulli, Giuliani, Paganini (no violin caprices), Sor

 

Competition Rules

–    All competition performances are open to the public.
–    The playing order of the competitors will be decided by draw.
–    The programme stated in the application is binding. Changes are possible only until application deadline on 22nd February 2019.
–     The participant is responsible for complying to the rules. If you are uncertain about your programme, consult the organiser. A programme non-compliant to the rules will lead to disqualification.
–    The order in which the works are played may be chosen by the participant.
–    The programme must be played from memory.
–    Participants must bring all the music scores of the works to be played for the jury.
–    The assessment will be based on artistic-musical presentation, style accuracy, security and of most importance, musical interpretation. Scores will not be disclosed.
–    The decision of the jury is final with no right of appeal.
–    The prizewinners must attend the awards ceremony and must participate in the prizewinners‘ concert. The concert programme will be chosen by the jury.
–    The organizer has the right to record the competition performances and the prizewinners‘ concert for possible public performance. The participant will receive no financial compensation for this.
–    Participants must show a valid identification document upon arrival.
–    Participants must pay for all travelling, accommodation and living expenses.
–    The organizer carries no responsibility for any personal injury or loss of personal belongings which might occur during the time of the competition.
–    In case of interpretational differences only the German version of these rules is binding.

 

Application

Enrolment in the 14th Anna Amalia Competition for Young Guitarists can be made online (up from December 2018) via www.gitarreverein-weimar.de as well as the payment of the registration fee of 50,- € by bank transfer until 22nd February 2019 at the latest.
The number of participants is limited. The admission occurs in the order of the entrance of the registrations.
Incomplete or late applications cannot be accepted.
In exceptional cases the fee may be paid upon arrival.
In case of a refusal by the participant the registration fee cannot be refunded.
