Guitar Association Weimar e. v.
1992 to today
On October 24, 1992, committed guitarists, music school teachers, students and professors from the Franz Liszt University of Music founded the Weimar Guitar Association on the initiative of Prof. Monika and Jürgen Rost to promote young artists and the educational, artistic and scientific areas of guitar and lute playing.
The first goal was to organize a competition for children and young people, which was held for the first time in the rooms of the music college a year later as the Anna Amalia guitar competition. Since 1997, the Schloß Belvedere music high school has hosted this competition, which is held every two years. It has been held internationally since 1999 – Weimar was the European Capital of Culture. The Anna Amalia competition for young guitarists is now one of the most renowned competitions for young guitarists in Europe. Numerous award winners have been supported in their careers and have found their permanent place on the international concert podium. The competition, which took place for the 10th time last year, is still the central project of our association that has an impact far beyond the borders of Germany.
From the beginning, the guitar club organized a parallel concert series in Weimar, initially under the title “Competition participants introduce themselves”, mostly in the Wittumspalais Weimar. Since 1998 it has been continued as guitar music in the vaulted cellar in collaboration with the Weimar city library and offers young, outstanding guitarists in particular the opportunity to introduce themselves to an interested audience. The demanding level of the soloists and chamber ensembles and the beautiful concert atmosphere ensure that the guitar as a concert instrument has a permanent place in the rich Weimar concert calendar.
The Weimar autumn course for young guitarists and guitar teachers, which has been taking place since 2001, serves to provide further training in the pedagogical area. In individual lessons from experienced teachers, including those from the Franz Liszt University of Music, students and teachers receive important impulses for their further work. In addition, participants can gain new experiences by working together in the guitar orchestra, which is an integral part of the course.
The club offered the Tiefurt Guitar Night a total of 10 times, a special event in which music and conviviality were combined and the guitar was presented in its entire spectrum in several concert blocks from the Renaissance and Baroque to flamenco and jazz. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary, we want to stick to the recipe for success of this event on the one hand, but also dare to do something new: celebrate with us and enjoy the Guitar Night Special in the Köstritzer Spiegelzelt.
